Dr. Bryce Kaye
Dr. Bryce Kaye has the experience and knowledge about how to stay on course. He has authored a book on marital dynamics and counseled thousands of couples over 40 years in practice. Half of what he does is marriage counseling and the other half is individual therapy. His PhD in personality gives him a deeper perspective into the emotional regulation difficulties that often underlie marital dynamics. You can read his client reviews from his land-based counseling center website.
In addition to being an experienced sailor, Bryce received his B.A. in psychology from Columbia University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology and personality from the University of Illinois. His earliest research was on the subject of reactance to the elimination of freedom, consistent with his career-long interest in human boundary interactions. After receiving his doctorate, he directed an outpatient alcoholism treatment program. In that position, he authored and was the principal investigator for a federal research project on how different personalities interact with alcoholism treatment. In 1984, Bryce began his private practice in Cary, North Carolina where he treated marital problems, depression, anxiety, trauma, dissociation and compulsive disorders. Over the years, he has evolved treatment methods based on principles derived from psychophysiological research. His book about marriage improvement is titled The Marriage First Aid Kit .
Bryce owns a psychological practice with 5 therapists in Cary, North Carolina. He splits living between Cary and Oriental, NC where he lives on his pilothouse sailboat with his wife Helen and their 4 lb. Yorkshire terrier Suzy Q. When he is not writing or seeing clients, he and Helen spend their time cruising the sounds and outer banks of North Carolina.
First Mate Helen
Helen Kaye learned to sail in her early twenties while living and working in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She is a member of the Raleigh Sail and Power Squadron and has passed their Seamanship course. Over the course of their thirty-seven year marriage, Helen and Bryce have owned and sailed three boats in eastern North Carolina. Together they have cruised as far north as Baltimore and as far south as Charleston.
Helen is a cum laude graduate from Douglas College of Rutgers University. She received a Masters of Education degree in Speech Language Pathology from Penn State. She currently owns and directs Cary Speech Services, a pediatric speech therapy practice in Cary, North Carolina.
The vessel name Dragonlady has been taken from Helen’s nickname, given to her by state legislators in North Carolina. Helen used to be the principal of the multi-handicapped program for children at the Governor Moorehead School for the Blind in Raleigh. Her vigorous efforts to secure adequate funding for the children earned her the reputation as being “The Dragonlady” around the state legislature. Both Bryce and Helen take great pride in her well-earned reputation.
Helen and Bryce have two grown children, Heather and Christopher, and two grandsons named Andrew and Alec. Their children have grown up in and on the waters of the Neuse River, Pamlico Sound, and Cape Lookout National Seashore. When not sailing or working with client couples, Helen likes playing with her Yorkshire terrier, entertaining, and cooking gourmet meals for family and friends.
