Today we donned our swimsuits and took a dinghy ride down Taylor’s Creek in Beaufort to see the wild horses on Bird Shoal and Carrot Islands. This is all part of the Rachel Carson Wildlife Preserve. On hot days like this one the horses can often be seen either near the open water where there is a sea breeze or under the shady trees in the interior of the islands. We caught up with a stallion and mare near the water in the photo below.
We took a trek through the interior of the island and came out by the dunes where we ate a picnic lunch while listening to the sound of the surf pounding on the beach. It has been very, very windy the past couple of days and there are white caps in the ocean with seas running five feet–not something that we want to experience!
Tomorrow we will leave Beaufort and head back to Oriental so our present Odyssey couple can drive home. Bryce and I will top up our water tanks and provision the boat for another Odyssey. Tomorrow evening we will get to meet another Odyssey couple at the Captain’s Dinner and it will begin all over again.
