At the Spirit of Christmas celebration in December I discovered Heartworks. This is a non-profit after -school program for youths from kindergarten to eighth grade. Many of the children come from poverty and are at risk for school drop-out. There may also be abuse or drugs in their home environment. This program is run on grants and donations from concerned individuals and charities. It is housed in Bayboro in an abandoned car dealership.
On Friday I got to meet the director of Heartworks and got to see the physical space in which it is housed. Now they are planning to open a developmental day care program for at-risk kids from infancy to age 5. This program will be run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. The space will be complete mid-February and they already have a few kids signed up. I have volunteered my time on Fridays to work directly with the kids and staff of both programs. Right now they have no toys, books, games, puzzles, etc. for this program. Today I put out an e-mail to my staff at Cary Speech Services and already people are offering to donate toys that their kids have out-grown. What a good feeling to be involved in such a good cause!
