For a very small town, Oriental has a lot of heart and spirit. The town takes every opportunity to celebrate life. This is a town that likes parades and pagents and of course Christmas is no exception. Every year the second weekend in December is “Spirit of Christmas”. It usually starts on a Friday afternoon with open houses at some of the businesses–that means a libation of some sort and cookies, followed by the parade of boats on the waterfront, and then the lighting of the Christmas star at the inner harbor. On Saturday there are more opportunities for free food around town, the live Nativity enacted by local children in front of the Methodist Church, and then the parade at 4:00. Around dusk hundreds of luminara light up the streets of the village. Yes, this is a Norman Rockwell town! I certainly prefer this to the blaring of Christmas music at the mall. This really does capture the Spirit of Christmas.
