“Awesome” is the best word to describe yesterday. Our daughter, Heather, came from Boone with boyfriend in tow on Friday afternoon. We don’t see her that often because she works retail and frequently is unable to get weekends off. She is also six hours away from the coast. Saturday morning we left our dock in Oriental at the crack of dawn and took the boat to Beaufort where we tied up at the town docks. There we met our daughter-in-law and our two grandsons. Bryce took the dinghy down from the davits and ferried us out to Bird Shoal Island where we promptly set up camp with beach umbrellas and chairs, sand toys, picnic coolers, and fishing rods.
It was a fun day for all. Our seven-year-old grandson caught the most fish–several pin fish, a sea robin, and a puffer fish–none of which were “keepers” but still lots of fun to catch. The water was warm, the sun was out bright, the parade of boats out to the Beaufort channel was fun to watch, the sandwiches were delicious (thanks to Heather’s boyfriend who is a manager of a ‘Jimmy John’s), and the company was great! All told the day was “awesome” from start to finish!
